Joan Bradford, Tom's first wife, was played by Diana Hyland who was born on Jan 25, 1936 (RLN:Gentner, Married Name:Goodson) in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and died on Mar 27, 1977, age 41, in Los Angeles, California (cancer).
Joan was the daughter of Gertie and Paul Wells.
Before Joining EiE
When Diana first started acting the 1950's, she appeared
on the soaps THE GUIDING LIGHT and THE BRIGHTER DAY using the name Diane Gentner.
Diana Hyland made over 30 of her TV guest appearances on shows such as
Kojak, Cannon, The Fugitive (four different episodes), The Invaders (three different episodes),
I Spy, The Man from UNCLE (two different episodes) and many, many others.
During EiE
In Mar 15, 1977: Based on Thomas Braden's book, "Eight Is Enough" premiered on the ABC-TV network.
In April 5 or 12?, 1977: Diana Hyland, who died of cancer Mar 27 after four (according to Tim Brooks) or five (according to Alex McNeil) episodes was filmed, appeared for the last time on the show. The week after, Tom carried on as a widower as the writers wrote her out as "being away". Her death was addressed in the second season explaining that she died "about a year ago".
On September 11, 1977, at the 29th Television Emmy Awards, Diana Hyland was posthumously awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy or Drama Special for her performance in "The Boy in the Plastic Bubble." Co-star John Travolta accepted the award on behalf of her memory at the awards presentation. John commented that "she's a great actress and the Academy has good taste. Wherever you are Diana, I love you, we did it baby, alright!"
