May 14, 1990, Laurie Walters appearred in the TV movie "Columbo: Murder in Malibu" as Helen Ashcroft. A romance novelist Theresa Goren agrees to marry her playboy lover Wayne Jennings. He drives through the night from a tennis tournament in palm springs after he gets a call from Theresa claiming she does not want see him again and he shoots her dead. Jess McCurdy, Theresa's sister and publicist, made the call to break them up and hired a detective to gather dirt on him. He confesses to murder after the mileage on his car does not match, but he is released when the fatal shot is not from his gun. Wayne killed her while she slept, dressed her and made it look like a robbery. He planned to return to palm springs but could not get away when a cable repair truck parked in the street outside so shot her again, but the label in Theresa's panties was on the wrong side, a mistake only a man could make.
