Although only marginally a horror film, this is easily the most interesting and intelligent entry in the "dead teenager" sweepstakes, a film that actually dares to place its murders in a microcosmic political climate: the American high school. David (Derrel Maury) is the new kid who finds that the school is being run by three preppie brutes, Bruce (Roy Underwood), Craig (Steve Bond), and Paul (Damon Douglas), who terrorize the student body. When David foils a rape attempted by the brutish trio, they retaliate by crushing one of his legs. Upon his recovery, David decides the time has come to dethrone the rulers of Central High and quietly sets about murdering the three, being careful to make the deaths look like accidents. His mission succeeds, but David soon finds himself in the very position he loathed as the weaklings he tried to defend attempt to gather power, court favors from their new hero, and take over the school. Fights break out, and David, disgusted that the oppressed have turned into oppressors, once again begins to eliminate troublesome students, eventually opting to blow up the entire school. Shot in only three weeks on a minimal budget, MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH is a fascinating little movie that delivers its expected exploitation thrills while presenting a political allegory, albeit a somewhat confused one. We are shown a world run entirely by adolescents. Director Renee Daalder understood the average American teenager's view of high school: it is a highly structured caste system wherein differences are poorly tolerated. Go into any high school in America and you'll find characters not unlike those in MASSACRE AT CENTRAL HIGH. Unfortunately, the average exploitation viewer didn't understand the film, and it died an unfair box-office death.
