Exterior house set

       I have heard two different thoughts on where the exterior shots were 
       filmed featuring the Bradford home... one (which is more credible) 
       says it was a facade at the Warners Ranch and another says it was 
       actually a house in Sacremento which was used
       when exterior shots were needed. Can anyone shed some light?
       Is the house/facade still around? I know you can still see a lot 
       of other TV homes in and around the LA area.

      I heard that the house was actually somewhere in Los Angeles, and that 
      it's been torn down. Seems to me someone said there's a shopping mall 
      there now. Don't know what street it was located on. (I live on the 
      East Coast and have never been to L.A. except for the airport on a 
      stopover on the way home from Hawaii.)

      I am trying to find out where the locatio is that was used in the show. 
      Regarding other messages about this, I do know this much...it was not 
      shot at Warners. I've been on the main backlot and the ranch and it 
      wasn't shot there. The Waltons was shot on the main lot, and the Ranch 
      is famous for its neighborhood, which features the homes used in
      Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie and The Partridge Family. Cool 
      neighborhood, huh? :)

Having been to the area where the house used to be, I can only think of one reason why the white fence might have been there. The road is actually a culdesac that backs up the the LA River (i.e. concrete flood channel). That house was rather large and, having noticed that there was nothing across the street, I'm thinking that that house was either the only one on that part of the street or 1 of 2 that stood there. Since the EIE house is many times larger than any other house in the neighborhoods nearby, I wonder if it used to be inhabited by a wealthy family that wanted to fence themselves off from the rest of the world. Today, this is done in LA by gigantic concrete walls and rod iron fences with spear-like ornaments on top. This is only a guess, but having seen how small the area is where the house was, I'll bet it's not too off the mark.

Yeah, it was definitely a dirt road. Perhaps it was a private road that the city didn't maintain? I always found it odd when a car came zooming down that street and a trail of dust followed.

Nathan, what is there now, where the house used to be? And is it inside LA or a suburb of LA, me not being that familiar with LA, even though I was there once, a long time ago. And did the studio own the house or was it a private citizen's house?

From things I've read on here, it used to be a private residence, but was later used solely for filming purposes. It's in North Hollywood which is technically part of LA, but is considered a suburb by many. It's +/- 1/2 mile from Universal Studios off a busy street with a zillion car dealerships on it. Unfortunately, the land was stripped of every single original bush, tree and bit of charm to make way for a tightly packed housing development complete with palm trees, etc.. It's difficult to imagine that the house was ever even there when you look at it now. I was stunned and quite sad the first time I drove down that street and saw what they'd done. I was convinced that I had the wrong address.....but I didn't. :(

I never got to see the house used in the EiE series but seems like the interiors keep popping up in movies. The other night I saw Nation Lampoon's Christmas Vacation w/ Chevy Chase and looked like some of the interior sets of EiE like the staircase and the living room. In the Christmas Vacation movie it looks like they turned Tom's study into a dining room. I've started paying more attention to movie & TV sets to see if I see anything familiar. Any other Eightfamily fans see this movie? I forget when it came out.

That's interesting about them using the sets for other tv shows and movies. I'll keep an eye out for "Christmas Vacation". Now is the time it will probably be shown a lot. I saw the house used in quite a few television commercials before it was destroyed. It seems though, everytime it was used, the shutters were a different color. I think it was a residence, so the home owners may have been trying to change the look, so people wouldn't recognize it.

In case any of you are curious.......

The strangest thing about where the EIE house used to be is that the area looks nothing like the neighborhood you would expect to find that type of house in. The road is just off a wide, busy road with car dealerships and fast food restaurants on it. Universal Studios is just down the street. The road turns into a culdesac which is bordered on one side by the Los Angeles River which is surrounded by concrete. Portions of this same "river" were used in the drag race scene in the film, "Grease" in case you need a visual. I imagine the house stood out quite a bit as the houses on the parallel streets to Chiquita are all ranch style homes without much character. Even the houses that are next to where the house used to be are drastically different. That's L.A. for ya....no continuity in architecture, zoning and virtually everything else.

Yes, I did get to see the house. I worked on three episodes as an extra when I was 14 yrs old. After the day was over for us, the director asked a few of us if we wanted to watch a scene being filmed at the Bradford house. So we went there, and Grant Goodeve and Adam Rich were doing a scene on the front lawn. The house was very near the studio. I was only 14, so I didn't pay much attention to the address or anything, but I remember it was a non-descript street off of a main road. Surprisingly, it was a dirt road. I have often watched the show to see if it shows that it was dirt, and sometimes you can tell. The house was at the end of the road on the right hand side. As I remember, there weren't very many houses on the street. Anyway, that's my recollection of the house. I wish I could remember all this better, but it was 21 years ago!! All I have are my memories, and a picture of me and my girlfriends with Danny Bonaduce, who was in an episode where he and Tommy got caught drinking.

The exterior shots of the Bradford home were filmed at a house located across the street from Universal Studios in Burbank, CA. Unfortunately the house has been demolished and condos have been constructed in it's place. The home was located on Chiquita street right off Lankershim.

The house used as the exteriors for the Bradfords was in Studio City, California, right off Lankershim Blvd, across the street from Universal Studios. It was torn down over a year ago, and the land was used to build a high-priced housing development. I used to take Eight Is Enough fans there when they came to town. The house was not lived in for years and was only used as a filming location.

The Real Eight is Enough House: After growing up back east and dying to see the real "Eight is Enough" house, I finally managed to get the address of the house used for exteriors on the show (10703 Chiquita in North Hollywood, CA) today. So, now that I live in L.A., I drove over there today only to find that the house had been demolished and a typical Southern CA concrete, overly dense housing development had been built. The area looks absolutely NOTHING like it did on the show. You would never know that the house, the tree in front, the little cement wall etc.. was ever there. :( Guess this means no more reunion movies- at least, none using new shots of the house exterior! I'm so bummed.

Actually, the way I found out the "Eight Is Enough" house had been destroyed was by your post on this message board.

It may not have been demolished at the time I was there, I just didn't have an address, so I really didn't know it's exact location. Thanks for the address, it will be a nice piece of information for my EIE scrapbook.

I loved that house and it's a pity it's been demolished. I've always asked to myself whether it was used in other movies. I just saw it in an episode of "The family Hogan" and in an episode of "Quantum leap" (the one with the haunted house). But in both, the interiors were unrecognizable.
